Yugambeh Jagun
A walk through Yugambeh Country
Written and illustrated by Faith Baisden
Edited and produced by Broadcast Books
Yugambeh Jagun is a beautiful and personal celebration of Faith’s Country and the Yugambeh language.
Yugambeh Jagun – the country including the Scenic Rim, the Gold Coast, Tamborine Mountain and the lands that surround it – is stunning and varied. Home to birds, plants and animals unique to Australia and loved by us all.
Artist and writer Faith Baisden, whose family are Kombumerri and Mununjali from the Yugambeh language group, takes us for a walk on her Country. She stops to spend time with borobi, a koala, and buneen, the echidna, to look at the mungera worong, gum leaf, and moiyum moiyum, waterlily, and to follow the flight of the mibunn, wedge-tailed eagle, and more.
Faith introduces readers to the Yugambeh names for the local flora and fauna, and reflects on the subjects she has drawn and painted. This beautiful art book will make a great addition to your collection, a gift for a loved one, or resource for your language learning or teaching.
About the author
Faith Baisden is an artist who enjoys exploring the beauty of plants, animals and landforms in the country around the Gold Coast and the Scenic Rim in South-East Queensland. She pairs her artworks with the language of the Yugambeh people, which was almost lost in the wake of white settlement. She hopes that by linking these images with their Yugambeh names, the timelessness of the Country and the richness of her Aboriginal heritage can be shared by all.
Faith’s works have been displayed in prominent exhibition spaces including the Queensland Museum, the State Library of Queensland and the Gold Coast Exhibition and Convention Centre. In 2023, her work was included in the JAALA Biennial Exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. Faith’s artistic interests are varied as she is a filmmaker, author, illustrator and musician.
