Skiing Off The Roof
Written by Rick Walkom
Edited and produced by Broadcast Books
A celebration of the history of snow sports in the magnificent Snowy Mountains in New South Wales.
Skiing Off The Roof is a book about the legendary pioneer skiers, adventurers, snowboarders, summer stockmen, environmental warriors, ski club members and mountain staff – the colourful denizens who have carved deep tracks on the frozen slops around Charlotte Pass during the past century. The book contains 450 wonderful photos, many of them rare.
Author Rick Walkom arrived at Charlotte Pass in the New South Wales Snowy Mountains in 1975, after completing university. He was keen to take a short working holiday with a couple of mates before settling down to a life on the land. It was not to be! This famous, snowbound outpost of winter sport on the roof of Australia seduced and captivated him, and he stayed for fifteen seasons.
“Rick has written a wonderful and insightful history of Charlotte Pass. A must read for anyone with an interest in the Australian snowfields.” — Leon Smith. Pioneering member, Ski Tourers Association, 1950s
